These landmark titles have changed the way American evangelical Christians think, talk, worship, and live. This new list allows you to look deeper into this large, influential group by reading about these important books that have truly shaped them and the evangelical movement.
Beyond the popular The Purpose-driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For? by Rick Warren, the Left Behind Series, and C.S. Lewis’s Mere Christianity, there are scores of works that have changed both faith and the American culture. The list was chosen by the editors and writers of Christianity Today.
“The list is admittedly a combination of intuition, guesswork, and collective wisdom,” said Mark Galli, managing editor of the magazine. “The point was not to publish an inerrant list and end all discussion, but actually to spark a vigorous discussion. This book list, we trust, will get people talking about what evangelicalism has been and will be at its core.”
This list is likely to stir passionate responses in readers as they consider the books and authors who most influenced their own faith. Teachers, preachers, politicians, and cab drivers may want to offer their own nominations.
SOME OF THE MORE CURIOUS OR UNUSUAL BOOKS INCLUDE:
• The Stork Is Dead by Charlie W. Shedd
• All We’re Meant to Be: Biblical Feminism for Today by Letha Dawson Scanzoni
• The Genesis Flood by Henry M. Morris & John C. Whitcomb
• Managing Your Time by Ted W. Engstrom
• Understanding Church Growth by Donald Anderson McGavran
• A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
• And the #1 book (besting both Warren and Lewis!) Learning Conversational Prayer by Rosalind Rinker
