When we celebrate Thanksgiving, some think of eating turkey and other dinner traditions, but I believe the majority would agree that being with family is the most important. Some families take this reminiscent holiday to thank God for the many blessings they have – food, clothes, shelter, and all the other things that make our lives comfortable. But what would a thankful heart be without including the little ones that give us so much joy?
Those who have chosen to be a stay-at-home parent know all too well the job isn’t an easy one, but Angie Peterson, author of Celebrate Home, has written a book that will contribute to that thankful heart.
Peterson points out the wisdom in having a daily agenda. She does not suggest rigorous scheduling, but a general plan that should start with giving your day to God. To help in this daily planning, Peterson offers pages of play activities and numerous suggestions for fun fieldtrips.
For the stay-at-home parent of school age children, she recommends ways to be involved in their school. Peterson talks about first day anxiety for the grieving parent and how to team up with the teacher. She also provides a clever “off-to-school” list.
Peterson stresses the importance of taking care of yourself and presents a section on that subject. She includes appendixes that provide lists of scripture references to lead you though various parenting situations and weblinks to connect you with outside interaction.
This Thanksgiving as you gather as a family, look at the faces of your children knowing your days with them make a difference.
