As a follow-up to Casting Crowns critically acclaimed self-titled debut, Casting Crowns has some pretty lofty expectations to fulfill with their sophomore effort, Lifesong.
Lifesong is successful in delivering a collection of 11 original songs that cause listeners to reflect on their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and others, as the songs on the project center on Biblical based themes, both those that are thought-provoking and inspiring.
Project highlights include the questioning, “Does Anybody Hear Her,” the pain-driven “Praise You in the Storm,” and the worshipful “Father, Spirit, Jesus.”
One personal favorite is the Mark Hall and Nichole Nordeman penned song “Stained Glass Masquerade.” This song gives us a perfect example of how the songs on this project strive to present authenticity and genuineness through a transparent and honest collection of songs.
Lyrically, the songs are well-crafted, with thought-provoking, encouraging and extremely hopeful messages. Musically, the project captures Casting Crowns signature sound, mixing pop and adult contemporary styles throughout. Like Casting Crowns, this effort promises more catchy lyrics and inspiring messages.
Lifesong is somewhat thematic in the sense that the majority of the songs focus on our relationship with Christ, others and how we should live as an example of Christ in our day to day lives, but it is not limited only to the happy, praiseworthy moments. Hall and the other members of Casting Crowns don’t sugarcoat some of the issues we all face. They aren’t afriad to dig deeper into some trying times that might exemplify pain, hurt and struggle. Yet, the results are victories through Christ and in meaningful songs that leave you feeling renewed and refreshed.
