Can We Ever Have Too Much of God?

“What then are we afraid of? Can we have too much of God? Is it a
misfortune to be freed from the heavy yoke of the world, and to bear the
light burden of Jesus Christ? Do we fear to be too happy, too much
delivered from ourselves, from the caprices of our pride, the violence of
our passions, and the tyranny of this deceitful world? … François
Fénelon (1651-1715)
C. S. Lewis put it another way, “God made us, invented us as a man invents
an engine. A car is made to run on gasoline, and it would not run properly
on anything else. Now God designed the human machine to run on Himself. He
Himself is the fuel our spirits were designed to burn, or the food our
spirits were designed to feed on. There is no other. That is why it is just
no good asking God to make us happy in our own way without bothering about
religion. God cannot give us a happiness and peace apart from Himself,
because it is not there. There is no such thing.”
As we study the New Testament book of Mark, we find the story of Jesus’ encounter with a man who’s life had fallen apart. This man had gotten separated from God, separated from his friends, his family, and even separated from himself by his self-destructive behavior. How did Jesus respond to this person who’s life was so troubled? Fnd out in the fifth chapter of Mark.
