Caedmon’s Call Immediate Retail Success

Essential Records artist Caedmon’s Call has launched its highly anticipated and fourth national recording, In the Company of Angels: A Call to Worship, amidst wide critical acclaim. Following its Sept. 25 debut, the recording immediately garnered No. 1 on the SoundScan compiled Top Internet sales chart, nearly doubling the sales of the No. 2 spot held by Lee Greenwood, as well as outselling U2, P.O.D., Live, Bob Dylan, Alison Krauss, Tori Amos, and new releases by Steven Curtis Chapman, Queensryche and others. The recording also landed at No. 3 on the Top Christian Albums Sales chart, and sold nearly 18,000 copies in its first week.
During the recording’s release week, Caedmon’s Call performed nightly concerts, dialoged with numerous worship leaders, and met thousands of fans. Surrounding each concert on this tour, Essential Records also arranged several well-attended retail in-store “signing” events, as well as arranged numerous interviews with radio and other regionally based media. Essential further implemented an extensive grassroots, publicity, and advertising campaign surrounding the local concert events.
To introduce fans to In the Company of Angels, Caedmon’s Call broke with the typical touring pattern to instead offer fans across the country insight into its experience at “Logos.” In the Company of Angels is based on that community of worship that the band was intimately involved in developing five years ago. In fact, “Logos,” held at the band’s home church, Second Baptist Church of Houston, the nation’s second largest Baptist church, became an integral part of this tour Sept. 30 as thousands of fans packed the church to worship and celebrate the new album’s release.
Designed as a worship event, the current Caedmon’s Call tour is not offering an opening artist. The band has chosen instead to take the Logos service “on the road” combining worship songs with a speaker from their home church to talk about biblical worship. Some of the events featured guest speaker Kevin Twit from Christ Community Church in Franklin, Tenn.
Taking that Logos idea a step further, Caedmon’s Call held meetings while on tour with worship leaders and music directors from local churches and colleges. Caedmon’s Call was able to share its heart for worship with the local leaders, as well as encouraged them to begin incorporating In the Company of Angels: A Call to Worship songs and the Logos experience into their own church services.
Band members encouraged these local leaders and concertgoers that packed venues along its tour not to use their new worship recording as an excuse for “church.” “Church-hopping has become more and more the norm in the Christian community,” noted Young, “but we feel called to remind fellow believers of the importance of truly ‘plugging in’ to a local body of believers.”
One significant stop on this tour was at Atlanta-based Northpoint Church’s Bible study, 7:22, led by Louis Giglio. The band led worship at this Bible study that drew almost 1500 people. Another 2000-plus people joined Caedmon’s Call that night at its concert at Perimeter Church.
Caedmon’s Call continues its In the Company of Angels: A Call to Worship tour in Los Angeles (Azusa, CA) on Saturday. Beginning Oct. 11, Caedmon’s Call will embark on its first-ever multi-artist Praise and Worship tour, the eleven-city Songs 4 Worship – The Tour, which also features Michael W. Smith, Nicole C. Mullen, Darlene Zschech, Don Moen, and Watermark.
Performing songs from its new album while on tour, In the Company of Angels: A Call to Worship is the band’s first full-length album since last year’s best-selling Long Line of Leavers. The project contains original songs, traditional hymns, and two live recordings, including the No. 1 radio single and Dove Award-winning “God of Wonders” from the multi-artist City On A Hill recording. The project also features a rare, previously unreleased chorus written by the late Rich Mullins. Early reviews of the project have been overwhelmingly positive. says, “At a Glance…In the Company of Angels is catchy, beautiful, skillfully crafted, and simply one of the year’s best worship albums.”
In the Company of Angels further features the current top 10, multi-format hit radio single, “Who You Are.” Written by Caedmon’s Call member and 18-year-old musical prodigy, Josh Moore, the song continues to climb the charts and lands at No. 6 and No. 9 on the Adult Contemporary and CHR charts respectively (The CCM Update). Moore also shares production credits as the band self-produced the album, a first since the band became a national success story in 1997.
Celebrated internationally, Caedmon’s Call’s first national, self-titled release set a record for the most units sold the first week out by a debut contemporary Christian artist and was ranked No. 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart. Since then, Caedmon’s Call has amassed a stream of accolades, including an “Album of the Year” Dove Award, a Billboard Music Video Award-nominated video, and six No. 1 radio singles. The band has also sold nearly 800,000 albums spanning four best-selling recordings.
