Bluefield College Presents Fiddler on the Roof

If you like musicals, then you don’t want to miss Bluefield College’s
production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” a must see, scheduled for Thursday
through Sunday, November 3-6 and including dozens of students and area
residents as members of the cast.
Developing on the Bluefield College campus since the spring of 2005,
this rousing musical will include some 40 cast members, including BC
students, faculty and staff, along with a host of local theatre buffs.
“About 60 people from the college and the community auditioned for
parts in the play,” said Charles Reese, an instructor of theatre arts who is
directing BC’s rendition of “Fiddler.” “We were glad to see the community
want to be so involved in the production.”

Reese will also star as Tevye in the musical, which takes place in
pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of this Jewish milkman who
is trying to keep his family’s traditions in place while marrying off his
three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to
make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs
required of them by Judaism.

Alongside Reese will be his wife, Rebecca, who also teaches theatre
arts at Bluefield College and who will play the role of Tevye’s wife, Golde.
The musical will feature extensive singing and dancing as Dr. Eugene Thomas,
a BC associate professor of music, will serve as music director for the
play, and area dance instructor Lisa Shumate will work as choreographer for
the production. BC student Matt Phillips will function as stage manager.

In the play, Tevye expresses his desire for sameness in the opening
number, “Tradition,” as he tries to keep everyone and everything “together.”
Other familiar songs, which have won Oscars for scoring and sound in other
renditions, will include “Sunrise, Sunset” and “If I Were a Rich Man.”

The Bluefield College performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. each
evening, Thursday through Saturday, November 3-5, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday,
November 6, all in the Harman Chapel and Performing Arts Center.

Admission for “Fiddler” will be $5 for adults and $3 for students and
seniors. For more information, please call the Bluefield College Office of
Public Relations at 276-326-4212, or visit the BC web site atwww.bluefield.edu/fiddler.
