BLAST! Explodes with Joy!

A few words about BLAST!, the Tony Award-winning Broadway production that is currently playing TPAC – “GO SEE IT!”
Seriously. Break into the kids piggy bank, search the sofa cushions for loose change, put off buying groceries until next week – find the money, buy the tickets, grab the kids and GO SEE IT!
I confess when I first heard the premise I was a bit bemused. Drum and Bugle Corp on Broadway? Gimme a break. Still, I had the tickets and Lord knows after the past week’s events a little mindless diversion would be welcome. I’m still not sure what I expected, but
I was totally unprepared for the onslaught of sensory overload that exploded from the stage. Lights! Action! Sound! Dance! This was
not your typical high school marching band half-time show. Instead the audience was treated to marvelous choreography, precision
movement, athletic free interpretation and masterful musicianship all swamped together with theatrical panache. Did it work? I counted
three standing ovations before intermission. My only complaint is there was too much going on to be able to take it all in. I need to
see this show at least a couple of more times before it leaves town.
In addition to being great family entertainment, the show is doing its part for the relief efforts in New York and Washington. The
Tennessee Performing Arts Center recently announced that TPAC and the producers of the national Broadway touring production of
BLAST! will donate a portion of the Nashville ticket proceeds to AmSouth Bank’s America’s Fund benefiting the disaster relief efforts
of the American Red Cross. “In the wake of last week’s tragedies, we feel an enormous need to reach out and help the many victims
who have been touched by these horrific events,” said TPAC’s president and CEO Steven Greil. “From this point forward, we will
donate $10 from each ticket sold to the Nashville engagement of BLAST! This past week has been a difficult time for all Americans.
Now more than ever, TPAC is proud to present a family show that represents and honors the spirit of America.”
BLAST! plays TPAC’s Jackson Hall, September 18 – 23, 2001.
