Award-winning and multi-platinum-selling artist Jaci Velásquez has been awarded a Latin
Billboard Music Award in the “Pop Album of the Year-Female” category for her second
Latin music offering Mi Corazón.
This award highlights Velásquez’ sucess with Mi Corazón yielding “Como se cura una
herida” as her 16th No. 1 radio hit (August 13) as it reached No. 1 on the Billboard Latin
radio chart- meriting the “Most Played Song of 2001” spot. Mi Corazón also claimed a top
10 hit on Billboard’s Top 50 Latin HOTSHOT Albums chart. Velásquez also heralds
simultaneous No. 1 spots on both English and Latin radio charts with “Adore” (Crystal
Clear/Word Records) and “Como se cura una herida” respectively.
Velásquez’ was also recently honored with a Dove Award in the “Spanish Language Album
Of The Year” category.
At the age of 22, Jaci Velasquez is one of the most recognizable
entertainers spanning two music genres, including Christian and the now-popular Latin
genre. With seven albums to her credit, Jaci has already garnered three RIAA certified
Platinum recordings, including her record-breaking debut, Heavenly Place, and her Latin
debut, Llegar a Ti. Other notables include three GRAMMY award nominations, five
additional Billboard Award nominations, and a Premio Lo Nuestro Award. Jaci is currently
the Latin spokesmodel for John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Professional Hair Care line of
products. During the two-year, nearly two million-dollar ad campaign, she is being
featured in ads running in magazines such as Latina and People en Espanol, as well as on
Latin-based television commercials.
Winners of the Billboard Latin Music Awards, which honor the most popular albums,
songs, and performers in Latin music, are determined by the actual sales and radio airplay
data that informs Billboard’s weekly Latin charts during a one-year period from the issue
dated February 17, 2001 through this year’s February 9 issue. The Telemundo network
aired the awards nationwide on Sunday, May 12.
