In response to former president Bill Clinton’s remarks on Evangelicals during the Tannenbaum Center’s awards ceremony, the Reverend Rob Schenck (pronounced SHANK), president of the National Clergy Council in Washington, DC, said, “Bill Clinton is in no position to pronounce judgment on anyone’s particular sins. To denounce a whole group of Evangelicals is nothing short of religious bigotry. Not only so, but Mr. Clinton’s remarks betray his ignorance of Evangelical theology. It was Jesus who said we can indeed, ‘know the truth.’ When we Evangelicals say we have the truth, it’s only because we know Christ, who is ‘the way, the truth and the life.’ Mr. Clinton should stick to pronouncements on politics and leave theology to others.”
Rev. Rob Schenck is a board member of the Evangelical Church Alliance, America’s oldest continuous association of Evangelical clergy. President Clinton had praised some Evangelicals for their humanitarian efforts, but condemned others as sinful for being in “believing they were in full possession of the truth.”
