In a career that has spanned two decades, garnered every
accolade the music industry can bestow, and sold millions of records, it is
difficult to believe there can still be “firsts” to attain. But with the
release of “BeBe Winans Live And Up Close,” the multi-Grammy Award-winning
singer and producer will indeed release his first “live” album on March 5,
2002. Recorded in Washington D.C. before a standing-room-only crowd this
past November, “BeBe Winans Live And Up Close” will air as a nationally-
televised special, February 26 on BET (Black Entertainment Television). A
video and DVD of the project is due to hit stores in mid-April.
On “BeBe Winans Live And Up Close,” BeBe returns to familiar territory as he
marries his R&B stylings with his gospel roots. The project features both
familiar songs as well as newly-penned tunes from Winans. The predominance
of the album was recorded live with the exception of two studio tracks, one
being the first radio single release, “Do You Know Him?,” produced by Warryn
“Baby Dub” Campbell. Production credits for the remainder of the album are
given to BeBe and Kedar Massenburg.
Younger sister Debbie Winans-Lowe, nephew Juan Winans, Margaret Bell-Byars
and Stephanie Mills lend their voices to the project. “BeBe Winans Live And
Up Close” marks BeBe’s third solo album, and his second release with Motown
Records.
BeBe first exploded onto the music scene in 1987, teaming with his sister
CeCe on the Gold-selling project, “Heaven.” The duo’s debut marked the first
gospel recording to reach the top 10 on Billboard’s R&B Chart since Aretha
Franklin’s “Amazing Grace” released more than a decade prior. BeBe and CeCe
went on to record three additional albums together, topping R&B and Gospel
sales charts with millions of units sold.
In 1993, BeBe was part of the Grammy Award-winning team of producers on
Whitney Houston’s “The Bodyguard” soundtrack. His songwriting, production
skills, and vocal arrangements led BeBe to work with artists such as Gladys
Knight, Yolanda Adams, Brandy, Bobby Brown, Eternal, Chante Moore, Dave Koz,
Nancy Wilson, and Stephanie Mills, just to name a few.
Taking his musical skills to the next level, BeBe joined Stephanie Mills in a
sold-out Broadway revival
of “Your Arms Are Too Short To Box With God” in 1996, and he released his
much-anticipated solo debut,
“BeBe Winans,” the next year. It contained the #1 European pop crossover hit
with vocal group, Eternal, “I Wanna Be,” and placed him back in the U.S. R&B
top 20 with the single “In Harm’s Way.” He returned to the theater in 2000,
starring in the Frank Wildhorn musical, “The Civil War.”
Currently, BeBe is touring several major cities with the play “What’s On The
Hearts Of Men.” This spring, BeBe will join his siblings and parents in a
Winans’ Family Reunion Tour, scheduled to play in select markets.
