Amy Grant to Release Simple Things

Word Recording Artist Amy Grant will release her long-awaited pop album, Simple Things, on August 19. This will be the Grammy and Dove award winning female vocalist’s first album of all new material since the 1997 release of Behind the Eyes. Simple Things will be released simultaneously by A&M Records to the general market.
“This album is three years in the making,” said Grant, who released a Christmas album and a Hymns project in the interim. “As a result, Simple Things is a collection of songs that reflect a lot of life that has happened along the way.”
Grant was joined by many old friends in the making of Simple Things, including producers Keith Thomas (Behind the Eyes, Heart in Motion) and Brown Bannister (Legacy…Hymns and Faith, Lead Me On) and co-writers Wayne Kirkpatrick (“Every Heartbeat,” “Somewhere Down the Road”), Jerry McPherson (“1974”), Chris Eaton (“Breath of Heaven”) and Will Owsley (“Leave it All Behind”). Simple Things also gave Grant the opportunity to work with new writers such as Trina Harmon (“When You Lie Next To me” by Kellie Coffey) and Dillon O’Brian (“Still On Your Side” by BBMAK and “One Belief Away” by Bonnie Raitt). The result is a new, lushly arranged album with the familiar Grant warmth, honesty and ultimately, joy.
“Word Records is excited to be releasing Simple Things. Whether it is a hymns project like her recent Legacy…Hymns and Faith or this new pop record, you can always count on Amy to deliver a first class recording project that is full of passion, faith and redemption… and great music. Her 18th album is as true as her first,” said Mark Lusk, senior vice president of marketing and artist development for Warner Bros. Records Christian Division.
Simple Things includes 10 songs:
“Happy”
“Eye To Eye”
“Simple Things”
“Beautiful”
“Out in the Open”
“I Don’t Know Why”
“Looking For You”
“Touch”
“Innocence Lost”
“After the Fire”
The album’s genesis was the summer of 2000 when Grant, her producer Thomas and some co-writing friends spent a week in Destin, Florida where much of the album’s more idyllic songs were written, including the title track, “Simple Things,” “Happy,” “Looking For You” and “Touch.”
Following the trip to Destin, Grant became pregnant with Corrina, her first child with new husband Vince Gill, and the writing and recording of the new project was sidelined while Amy and Vince welcomed the arrival of their daughter and dealt with some of the issues of a blended family.
Some of the more personal songs on the album deal with the issues of shame, forgiveness and healing that Amy dealt with during the years immediately after her divorce. “’Innocence Lost’ is one of only two songs on the album that I didn’t have a part in writing, but the lyric captures what I was feeling about how part of living involves losing your innocence,” said Grant. “And ‘Out in the Open,’ which is the first song I wrote for the record, is about finding freedom from shame and forgiving yourself.”
“I Don’t Know Why,” a song which Grant began writing with Kirkpatrick in early September 2001 took on new meaning a few weeks later when the United States was hit by terrorists. “Suddenly the idea of appreciating the moment took on a deeper meaning as I watched the news coverage of all the people who lost loved ones in an instant,” Grant remembers.
Together, the ten songs offered on Simple Things make it perhaps the most intimate glimpse ever offered by an artist who has always offered her music as an intimate portrayal of a life lived through redemption.
Grant has sold more than 24 million albums in her career and was recently honored for her body of work with an induction into the Gospel Music Association Gospel Music Hall of Fame. Grant also recently received two Dove Awards for her work on Legacy…Hymns and Faith. Grant, who debuted on the Word-owned Myrrh label in 1978 at the age of 17, has pioneered the path for Contemporary Christian music. Since then Grant’s musical resume has come to include one Quintuple Platinum, one Triple Platinum, and one Double Platinum album, as well as additional six Platinum and three Gold albums. Along with five Grammys, she also has received 24 Dove Awards, the highest honor in the Christian music market. Grant’s vast media exposure includes appearances on “Good Morning America,” “The Today Show,” “Oprah,” “Late Night With David Letterman,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and “Larry King Live” among others, and also heralds special television productions such as the Lifetime Television special “Women Rock!: Girls & Guitars,” The Grammy Awards, The American Music Awards, Christmas In Washington, an acting debut role in a CBS network original movie “A Song From The Heart”, as well as hosting the CBS network “A Christmas To Remember” special.
