America Under Attack–The Events of 9/11

2011 marks the 10th anniversary of the devastation that came to be known as “Ground Zero” when terrorists targeted the Pentagon and the World Trade Center with aircraft filled with American passengers. The following is from our archives, 9/11/2001.

Like something from a Tom Clancy novel, just before 9 AM this morning, a jet flew into the World Trade Center, followed by another a few minutes later. Each of the towers was attacked by an aircraft, at least one of which was hijacked. Early reports said a bomb went off some time later somewhere in the Towers, but this does not appear to be true at this point. Both towers have fallen with many people in them. An estimated 50,000 people work in the Trade Center and many thousand more in the surrounding two-block area. I am too stunned by what I see to take it all in. It doesn’t seem real.
As many as 200 NY firefighters have disappeared as they were the first on the scene to evacuate people and were inside the towers when they fell.

There has also been an attack on the Pentagon. A small commuter-size aircraft flew into a side of the Pentagon this morning… or possibly a large passenger jet depending on which report you hear.
American Airlines has confirmed two of its planes were hijacked. United Airlines has reported one of its planes is unaccounted for. The Mayor of Cleveland has reported a plane made an emergency landing there because they thought there might be a bomb on board.

A United flight crashed outside Pittsburgh, another flight has reportedly crashed somewhere – not reported where. We have at least 4 major aircraft that are reported to have crashed today either through hijackings or unknown causes.

The White House and surrounding area have been evacuated. There is a “reverse commute” as government workers in DC are sent home.

“Freedom itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward, but Freedom will be defended,” said President Bush. The President has been taken to a secure location and former Presidents have also been taken to secure locations.

Many churches are open for prayer and special services. The Worship Center at Belmont Church in Nashville is open for prayer.
Please join me in praying for our nation and the wisdom of our leaders and the intercession of a Merciful God.

Pray for the missing firemen, for the family members of those who work in and around the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, for the many wounded, for those on the missing flights.

I grew up in Washington DC. My father was a colonel in the United States Army who worked at the Pentagon. My brother and I just went to Washington DC and then to New York City in February, 2001, where we took many photos of both the Pentagon and the World Trade Center. Both buildings are symbols of our nation’s heritage and of our national pride, which is surely why they were targeted. It doesn’t seem possible that the buildings we just saw are gone or severely damaged.
This obscene attack is being called a “second Pearl Harbor” and should serve as a wake up call to a complacent nation that we are surrounded by violent people who consider us the enemy, and we need to throw ourselves on the mercy of a loving God and become a strong, God-fearing nation again.
We will continue to update as we hear more.
Churches are invited to post their special services at:Church Calendar.
Nashville services are listed at: Church Special Services
In light of the horrific events of today, tonight’s BLEACH/CELEBRITY/FRANCIS concert at 12th & Porter in Nashville has been cancelled. The show will be rescheduled for another time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those involved in the tragedies in New York, Washington, and outside Pittsburgh.
I will continue to post news about the attacks and what we can do to help as I learn more.
