ABC’s most popular new show for fall 2012 is the country-music-themed “Nashville.” Filmed in Nashville, TN, the series features many Music City sights and sounds including music that often features gospel music ties.
The most prominent Christian music connection is “Nashville” Executive Music Producer T-Bone Burnett. Burnett has been a fixture in Christian music as well as mainstream music for decades (including his work on movies like the recent “The Hunger Games”).
Burnett won Grammy Awards for the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” soundtrack and for his work with fellow Christian musician, Alison Krauss. His songs have been covered by Christian artists and groups including Sixpence None the Richer, B. J. Thomas and other gospel artists. The list of respected Christian artists he has produced is lengthy.
The show’s co-producer, musician Buddy Miller, is also a respected Christian musician and star Charles Esten has appeared on Christian music and religious videos.
Several songs featured on the show “Nashville” have also been written or co-written by Christian artists including Joy Williams and Carey Barlowe of Christian rock band Luna Halo (who co-wrote “Telescope), among others. Some of these songs have made it onto the new CD The Music Of Nashville Original Soundtrack.
So far “Nashville” has been a show Nashvillians can be relatively proud of with at least a few characters that appear to have a moral compass including the recent addition of “choir boy” Sean Butler (Tilky Jones). Let’s hope the gospel influence can keep the series from losing itself among the normal Hollywood trappings and pitfalls that ruin most good programming.
