ABC’s ‘Nashville’ Adds Wholesome Character Who Doesn’t Drink or Have Promiscuous Sex

ABC’s most popular new show for fall 2012, “Nashville,” follows regular and returning characters who represent personalities found in Nashville’s country music scene. Hayden Panettiere, Connie Britton, Charles Esten, Clare Bowen, Powers Boothe, Eric Close, and a host of other stars play country music singers, managers, friends, family, spouses and significant others, while newcomer Tilky Jones plays a wholesome, guitar-playing, pro football player.
In Episode 6, the refreshing character of Sean Butler is introduced to”Nashville” when Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) goes on a publicity date with the Tim Tebow-type rookie quarterback pro football player. Sean drinks club soda when Juliette takes him clubbing, earning him the nickname “choir boy” from Juliette.
In Episode 7, the principled Sean tells a disbelieving Juliette he isn’t into casual sex, and that he respects women too much to have sex with them outside the confines of marriage.
Sean Butler would have been right at home strumming his guitar in Mayberry with Sheriff Taylor on “The Andy Griffith Show” or sitting at the dinner table with Ma and Pa Ingalls and Half Pint on “Little House on the Prairie.” It wasn’t that long ago characters like Sean Butler were the norm. How times have changed. It is too bad that the addition of a wholesome character with morals is worthy of a headline in the 21st century.
This makes the 4th recurring television role for actor and singer Tilky Jones, who has appeared previously on “One Tree Hill,” “Single Ladies,” and “Pretty Little Liars.”
It will be interesting to see how the character of Sean Butler is developed, because, let’s face it–right now it is cool to make Christians look like hypocritical jerks in Hollywood. Time will tell what the writers of “Nashville” have in store for such a nice, moral guy. In the meantime, we congratulate ABC for having a clean-cut, principled character on “Nashville” without making him dysfunctional who does not believe in disrespecting women by having promiscuous sex outside of marriage.
