Cocoa Florida’s “Good Ole Days – A Tribute to Mayberry” which took place April 8 and 9, 2005, surprised everyone by being a smashing success.
A host of Mayberry “tribute artists” (including Allan “Floyd” Newsome, Kenneth “Oits” Junkin, Tim “Goober” Pettigrew, Jeff “Howard Sprague” Branch, Jamie “Opie” Sullivan, Mike “Wally” Darden, Kathryn “Flora” Darden, “Ernest T. Bass” and “Briscoe Darlling”) brought Mayberry to life during the first annual Good Ole Days Festival in picturesque, historic, downtown Cocoa, Fla.
Special guests for the event were Barney look-alike David “Mayberry Deputy” Browning and Jewell “Mayberry Mama” Kutzer, author of “Memories of Mayberry – Secrets of The Mayberry Momma.”
The two-day festival included a spaghetti lunch and autograph session on Friday, bluegrass music (compliments of the VW Boys and some local Cocoa bands) on both days, as well as a parade, an antique car and tractor show, and a Mayberry trivia contest plus other events on Saturday. In addition, event organizer Al Gandolfi put some of his own extensive Mayberry Memorabilia collection on exhibit.
Beautiful weather blessed the event and the charming city of Cocoa proved a lovely backdrop for the festival. The tribute artists were well received by event goers and were told over and over how much the crowd enjoyed the outfits and antics. Event planner Patrick Clendenning says that plans are already in the works for a follow-up to the successful event in 2006.
