Whether you like your movies at the theatre, on the tube, or on DVD this is a great week for movies.
One of the funniest Christmas movies in years hit DVD last week. “Elf,” starring Will Farrell, James Caan, and Bob Newhart as Papa Elf, will have your rolling in the aisle. “Elf” is a throwback to the old to Rankin-Bass animated TV specials, like “Rudolf” and “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” complete with an animated snowman and chalk drawing of the aurora borealis. It is endearingly sweet, and side-splittingly funny without ever stooping to coarseness or crudity for a cheap laugh. This is a Christmas classic that is destined to join the ranks of “Miracle on 34th Street,” “Scrooge,” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
If you just have to get out of the house, a good bet is the beguiling, “Finding Neverland.” Johnny Depp gives an extraordinary performance as J.M. Barrie, the man who wrote “Peter Pan.” The Oscar buzz has already begun for this beautifully written, directed and acted film.
And if the holidays have you all worn out, why not kick back and turn on the tube for the network premiere of “A Walk to Remember,” (The WB, Wednesday, November 24, 8PM EST)? This Mandy Moore vehicle based on the best-selling novel by Nicholas Sparks, is poignant, funny, tender, and just plain enjoyable. Don’t forget your Kleenex. You will need them.
