CITY OF MOUNT AIRY
PROCLAMATION
WHEAREAS, the Mount Airy Community is proud of native son,
Andy Griffith, and the inspiration for his enduring creation and the
many contributions that he has made to the entertainment and the arts;
AND WHEREAS, the “Andy Griffith Show” ran on network television from
1960 to 1968, a ratings leader that spanned 249 episodes and has been
showing in reruns ever since with “The Fishing Hole,” song ranked among
America’s best-known tunes;
AND WHEREAS, the small town of Mayberry had little crime except for the
ruckus caused by the town drunk, Otis. This show displayed a sense of
neighborhood and instilled values in friendship, honesty and overall good living;
AND WHEREAS, the citizens of Mount Airy, under this celebration format, have
planned Mayberry Days to honor Andy Griffith and the clean living displayed by
the Andy Griffith Show;
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the governing body of the City of
Mount Airy hereby commends all of those respnsible for the Andy Griffith Show
and the legendary Mayberry and proclaims September 26, 2002 through September 28, 2202 as Mayberry Days and pledges its support to the event and urges the
continuation of Mayberry Days as an annual event.
