Michael W. Smith Introduces Rocketown by Kathryn E. Darden for Christian Activities 3/8/2011 March 1994 -
Michael's last project, Change Your World, is an album of positive, catchy pop songs and memorable ballads with a recurring theme that is as simple and complex as the title implies. Songs encourage improving race relations ("Color Blind"), building a better world ("Love One Another"), learning not to take things at face value ("Picture Perfect") and committing yourself fully in a relationship ("I Will Be Here for You"). Through his music, Michael has tried to address the needs of a young and restless generation. Now Michael lends his talents to another project to impact local young people. This rare Nashville appearance by Michael benefits "Rocketown," a new Christian youth club that has been in the planning stages at Williamson County Youth for Christ for several months. The project's name is based upon Michael's popular song of the same name. "It is well known that there is a great need for weekend/night time entertainment for teens and young people in this area, not to mention entertainment that is Christian quality controlled," says Michael. "'Rocketown' is a place where teens can go to socialize, play games, dance or listen to music without being bombarded by drugs, alcohol and sexual temptations." Williamson County is the planned location for "Rocketown," and will involve the input of Williamson County Youth for Christ, Michael W. Smith, and a group of concerned artists, businessmen, and private individuals interested in providing a positive alternative to today's youth. "For many years a dream of mine has been to open a club to cater to this need," Michael states. "I have put my heart into this project, along with my time, energy and financial contributions. Finally, the right group of people have come together with myself to make this dream a reality." Michael W. Smith in concert at Two Rovers Baptist Church with special guest, Chip Arnold, March 8 at 7:30 P.M. Tickets are now available at all Ticketmaster outlets, Baptist Bookstore, Family Bookstores, Logos, and Koinonia.
