1/17/02 Billboard reports music sales down in 2001
Album sales in the United States dropped in 2001 from the previous year, according to Billboard magazine, but the largest factor isn't Napster or illegal copying of CDs, at least not on the surface. The problem is a substantial decline in the sales figures for the nation's top-selling recordings. According to Billboard, the top 10 albums of 2000 sold a collective 60 million copies. In 2001, the top 10 albums sold 40 million units collectively, a sharp drop that, in itself, accounts for nearly the entire 2.8% drop in U.S. album sales last year. The article notes that no albums last year topped 5 million copies sold, although 7 albums in 2000 sold in excess of 5 million units. Meanwhile, Baptist Press, citing figures from the Christian Music Trade Association, reports that sales of Christian music rose 13.5% in 2001 compared with 2000. SoundScan sales figures show sales of 49,965,000 units of Christian music.
