According to reports, "Heaven Is for Real" was the #1 new movie this weekend, the #1 inspirational film, and the #2 film overall for the Easter holiday weekend. Deadline places it was #2 behind the patriotic Behind ‘Captain America." Whatever its final numbers, "Heaven Is for Real" is the latest film showing evidence of a strong faith and family box office draw for a film with wide general audience appeal as well.

Kevin Sorbo's low-budget ($2 million) overtly Christian-themed "God's Not Dead" also managed to overtake Russell Crowe's big-budget but doomed "NOAH" this weekend although the sinking "Noah" movie managed to briefly surface again at #10 while "God's Not Dead" finished at #11 for the weekend with over with $4.7 million.

Meanwhile, "Son of God," the expanded version of the TV miniseries, has grossed nearly $63 million worldwide so far.

When you add in family-friendly movies like "Bears," "Rio 2," "Muppets," "Lego" and "Captain America," it is easy to see that family-friendly and faith-based films have a strong fan base in spite of often lower budgets, and that enthusiastic fan base generates remarkable staying power for these films.

The next faith-based film from TriStar Pictures will be "Mom's Night Out," a faith-rooted comedy with wide appeal about the trials and joys of parenting starring Sarah Drew (Grey’s Anatomy), Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings, Rudy) Emmy Award® winner Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond, The Middle) and platinum-selling country music artist Trace Adkins (Lincoln Lawyer). "Mom's Night Out" will hit theaters May 9 in time for Mother’s Day weekend. Also coming up will be "The Secret Handshake" with Amy Grant and Kevin Sorbo and the Oscar-nominated "Alone Yet Not Alone""
