When I asked my friend to go see the new Charlotte’s Web movie with me, I thought this could be fun… it’s always good to see a kid’s movie with someone who can make you feel young! However, when her loving husband called to say their baby dog – a 55 pound chocolate lab – had vomited all over his kennel, the night took a bit of a sour turn.

We did go to the movie, determined to make the best of it. When we arrived, we found a long line, and no separation for media. Seems the movie showing in our theater had not let out, so we were all waiting.

Once in the theater, the promoting radio station had some comments to make… without a mic, and I’m still not sure what she said. Even the start of the movie was not without a hitch… as we were without sound for about the first 30 seconds or so.

Now, I will admit, it’s been a while since I have seen the cartoon, and I’ve never read the book. However, I don’t remember the focus being so much on Fern as it is in the new version. I don’t remember her mom stressing about how much time she spent with the pig. (Although, Beau Bridges, as Doctor Dorian, has some great things to say.)

The movie stars Julia Roberts as Charlotte, Dakota Fanning as Fern, Steve Buscemi as Templeton, Dominic Scott Kay, as Wilbur, John Cleese as Samuel the sheep, Oprah Winfrey and Cedric the Entertainer are Gussy and Golly the geese, Kathy Bates and Reba McEntire are Bitsy and Betsy the cows, and Robert Redford as Ike the horse.

I was a bit disappointed with the addition of some bathroom humor into this film. This story stands on its own and didn’t need anyone’s “help” for it to be funny. Rather it takes away from the wonderful story that is really there.

It comes down to this, Charlotte’s Web is a great story that is poorly told in this movie. For the great graphics and film work, this is a good movie. For the story, it falls flat. And that is rather sad to me.

Seems to me, dealing with a sick dog, topped this movie off.
